Keep It Moving!

We know air is important above the surface of the water, but did you know it’s also important below the surface too?

Aerators and fountains are not just used to add a visual appeal to a pond, but also serve a vital purpose.   Both aerators and fountains facilitate movement of the water which reduces algae growth, bacterial settlement and increases oxygen in the water to support fish life.  We had the unfortunate call – one we never want to receive - to come and pick up a very large fish kill.  Based on observations by our staff and the behavior of the fish, we concluded that the most obvious deficiency was oxygenated water.

When you add an aerator or fountain to your pond, you are helping the ecosystem of the pond to maintain good health.  Hard, fast rainfall can cause a problem called stratification.  Stratification occurs when the warmer, oxygen-rich water sits on top of the pond and the dense, colder, oxygen deficient water rests on the bottom.  In between these two extremes is the very habitable thermocline.  As time wears on, the thermocline can become smaller and smaller, forcing pond life – which includes fish and beneficial bacteria - to rise to the surface to be able to breathe.  Stagnant water can become a trap for bacteria, odor and slow demise for fish.

Adding a bottom aerator would be the most optimal choice for critter health.  Adding fountains and floating bubblers also are good choices.  The aerator or fountain will continually circulate the water, disturbing the layers of uninhabitable areas making them all habitable and comfortable for pond life.  Also a properly sized unit will make the livable space uniform and give the fish full access to the entire pond.

Healthy ponds = healthy pond life!
