Retention ponds, like all aquatic systems, can become overgrown with vegetation. Overgrowth of vegetation in lakes and ponds can compromise system functionality and lead to violations and/or fines. Treating the overgrowth is not always straight forward and often requires a customized plan based on the ecosystem unique to each aquatic space. Specialized stormwater pond and lake maintenance crews possess the knowledge and experience to provide effective results.

Dragonfly Pond Works is an experienced pond and lake maintenance company with the knowledge and experience to provide your aquatic system with the customized maintenance solution needed to restore balance and health. We were recently contacted to assess a stormwater retention pond in Bradenton, Florida that had been left untreated for a significant amount of time and become overgrown with lilies, underwater weeds, and shoreline growth.

Pond and Lake Maintenance Company: Lilies and shoreline growth clogging the system

Lilies and shoreline growth clogs Florida retention pond prior to treatment by Dragonfly Pond Works, a pond and lake maintenance company.

Lakes, ponds, and stormwater systems overgrown with lilies can cause a variety of problems. They can limit storage capacity and clog inlet/outlet pipes; both of these issues may lead to flooding. Vegetation overgrowth may obstruct beneficial aquatic plant growth and limit pollutant filtration. They can also cause stagnation, leading to algal blooms, and/or mosquitoes.

Dragonfly's specialized pond and lake maintenance company experts assessed the stormwater system to decide the best treatment plan. Our customized solution called for treating the retention pond in phases with monthly visits. Treating an overgrown pond all at once can lead to the dying plants consuming all of the oxygen in the water. This oxygen depletion will lead to fish kills and the dying off of beneficial aquatic plants as well. We anticipated seeing quite a bit of regrowth as we treated the pond slowly until all of the unwanted vegetation was eliminated.
