Sand Filter: Stormwater Control Measure Restoration

Sand filter restored by Dragonfly Pond Works' Charlotte stormwater management experts.

Tom Pullaro- Vice President of Sales

A sand filter is a type of stormwater control measure (SCM) that temporarily stores stormwater runoff to filter out pollutants before they can reach local waterways. This stormwater device can remove floating debris, large particles, and fine particles. It typically filters stormwater runoff through a system made up of two chambers. Runoff first moves through the forebay or sediment chamber where larger particles are removed before draining to the filtration bed where fine particles are removed.

At Dragonfly Pond Works, our stormwater experts have extensive experience in sand filter maintenance and repair. These stormwater devices can accumulate silt at various rates, including silt from nearby construction sites. Silt removal will be needed at varying intervals depending on site-specific factors. Our Charlotte stormwater team recently restored a system suffering from poor drainage. It was clogged with accumulated sediment and required restoration of contaminated stone and the top few inches of filter media in the sand filter bed.

Sand Filter Restoration Process

This photograph shows the sand filter before the restoration process. Dragonfly's stormwater repair experts started by removing the top layer of silt impacted stone from the sand filter.

Dragonfly’s stormwater experts removed the contaminated stone and degraded filter fabric.

Following the removal of the stone, the crew removed the separation fabric below the stone. This photograph shows the stormwater device after the removal of the contaminated sand and stone and the degraded filter fabric.

Our specialized stormwater repair crew installed new separation fabric, followed by a clean layer of sand and stone.

The Charlotte sand filter has been restored to compliance and functioning as designed

The sand filter bed has been restored to function as designed to treat stormwater runoff.

The stormwater system’s forebay chamber was also compromised by accumulated sediment

Additionally, the forebay chambers of the stormwater sand filter required restoration. Sediment had accumulated in the chamber.

The forebay chamber has been restored by removal of accumulated sediment

Our stormwater control measure experts removed the accumulated sediment from the forebay chambers and hauled it off-site. The stormwater control measure is again compliant with local regulations.

Routine stormwater maintenance will help keep this sand filter performing effectively and prolong the life of the sand filter media. Specialized maintenance crews will assess for proper drainage, accumulated sediment, structural integrity issues, erosion, vegetation growth, and trash. Addressing problems as they arise will help avoid issues worsening and the potential for costly repairs, compliance violations, and/or fines. Dragonfly's stormwater experts can help repair and maintain all of your stormwater control measures, including sand filters. Please contact us to learn more.
