Pond Maintenance Contractor: Stormwater Pond Health

As a pond maintenance contractor, the Dragonfly Pond Works Team regularly encounters ponds that have become unhealthy for a variety of reasons. We assess the pond, identify the problems, and provide solutions that will transform the pond back to its beautiful, healthy state. We recently evaluated this stormwater pond that had become ugly, muddy, and unhealthy. During our assessment, we identified the issue to be Koi fish.

People are often interested in Koi fish for their ponds due to their bright colors. Unfortunately, Koi fish are not a good fit for stormwater systems. As an experienced pond maintenance contractor we know Koi fish as the pigs of ponds. Koi fish look for vegetation and roots to eat at the bottom of a pond by rooting. This rooting process stirs up the clay bottom of the pond. Clay particles are the smallest particles, so they remain suspended in the water for a very long time. The suspension of these particles is known as turbidity, which is what gives the pond the muddy look. The only way to remedy this is to remove the Koi fish. Additionally, Koi fish in a stormwater pond could potentially be washed downstream into lakes and streams. This is one way invasive species are introduced into native fisheries and can cause significant damage.

Once we drained the pond, we were able to remove all the adult Koi fish. We then stocked the pond with Bass. The Bass were necessary to eat the hundreds of baby Koi fish that remained. Once all of the Koi fish were removed, the clay particles were able to settle and this pond has returned to its clear, healthy state.

Game Fish Recommendations

In addition to Large Mouth Bass, we recommend a full line of game fish to be utilized in ponds. This includes, Bream, Channel Catfish, Minnows and STERILE Grass Carp (non-sterile are not legal in NC). Stocking a stormwater pond with game fish provides a variety of advantages. Game fish help balance the ecosystem of a pond. As discussed previously, they are helpful predators. Certain fish can also help control unwanted aquatic plants and help capture nutrients entering the pond from runoff. Providing stormwater pond maintenance is just another way Dragonfly Pond Works can help keep your pond healthy and beautiful!
