Raleigh-Durham Stormwater Dry Pond Repair & Reconstruction

Have you received a Notice of Violation (NOV) for a dry pond on your Raleigh-Durham property requiring corrective repairs or a complete reconstruction? Dragonfly’s specialized Stormwater Corrective and Reconstruction Crews have the expertise to restore compliance, safety, aesthetics, and functionality of dry ponds for commercial property managers, facility managers, and community managers across the Triangle and beyond.

Overgrown dry pond is being restored to compliance through tree removal by excavator.

Stormwater compliance is crucial for HOA and commercial properties in Raleigh-Durham to prevent flooding, maintain water quality, and avoid municipal fines. Dry ponds, also known as dry detention basins, are effective stormwater control measures (SCMs) when properly maintained. A dry pond is designed to temporarily store stormwater runoff, gradually releasing it downstream to reduce flooding and filter out pollutants. A dry pond should only hold water during and immediately after rain events. Key dry pond features include terrestrial grass cover on the basin and side slopes, a downward slope for positive drainage, and a sediment forebay with riprap to slow down incoming runoff and settle sediment.

Dry Pond Compliance Repairs & Reconstruction

While repairing and maintaining SCMs throughout Raleigh-Durham since 2006, we have been contacted countless times by management companies taking over a new property and the responsibility for a long-neglected stormwater system requiring a complete reconstruction. We’ve also received requests from property managers where ponds have been neglected for so long that management didn’t realize a stormwater device existed until it fell under local compliance regulations. Both cases require major repair and construction work from specialized stormwater vendors with the necessary experience and equipment to complete the project efficiently and safely.

Case Study: Dry Pond Restoration Process

Overgrown dry pond with very large established trees in the basin.

This is a classic example of an overgrown dry pond that required complete reconstruction. Our Client Service Team worked closely with this apartment community to provide a customized solution for their unique needs and busy property. Dragonfly's stormwater corrective crew implemented a comprehensive restoration plan for the dry pond, ensuring compliance and functionality.

1. Vegetation Removal: Woody vegetation and trees were completely cleared from the basin, side slopes, and the back of the dam. All cleared material was properly disposed of off-site

Dry pond cleared of woody vegetation has been properly graded for function.

2. Basin Regrading: The basin of the dry pond was regraded to promote positive drainage

3. Outlet and Inlet Work: Both the outlet and inlet of the dry pond were cleared of vegetation. Dissipator pads were installed at both locations using woven fabric and riprap. Dissipator pads reduce stormwater flow speed, preventing erosion and enhancing pollutant filtration

The dry pond has been restored and is now stabilized with straw matting and grass seed.

4. Stabilization and Seeding: Dragonfly's stormwater experts spread grass seed and stabilized the dry detention basin, side slopes, and the back of the dam using matting and straw. This ensures erosion control and establishes healthy grass growth within the SCM

The dry pond now has established grass and continues to be a compliant, healthy system.

Importance of Routine Maintenance

Following this reconstruction project, the apartment community initiated a routine maintenance contract with our team to keep the dry pond compliant and functioning as designed. Routine maintenance with specialized stormwater technicians is critical to ensure optimal function, safety, and aesthetics. Non-specialized crews, such as landscapers, lack the necessary training for this type of maintenance. Poorly maintained dry ponds can result in various issues, including flooding, damaged system components, poor water quality, erosion, mosquito breeding, compliance violations, and potential fines.
