Raleigh-Durham Stormwater Compliance

Stormwater devices throughout the Raleigh-Durham area fall under local compliance regulations. These exact regulations can vary somewhat from municipality to municipality, however across the area SCMs are required to function as designed and enforcement action will take place if the annual inspection finds a device to be non-compliant. SCMs are engineered devices and as such, require maintenance, repair, and construction services from specialized stormwater contractors.

Dragonfly’s specialized corrective crews have experience in completing a variety of major construction projects.

Major Tree Removal & Pond Restoration

In our 20 years of experience, we’ve seen countless examples of management companies taking over a new property and becoming responsible for long neglected stormwater devices that require a complete reconstruction. Additionally, we’ve completed projects on properties where ponds were neglected for so long and so overgrown that management didn’t realize a stormwater device even existed. These devices required major work to return the device to compliance.

The above dry pond was forgotten over the years and required a complete restoration. Dragonfly’s Corrective Crews removed all the woody vegetation, including very large established trees. We then regraded the basin for proper drainage, rebuilt the dissipator pad and inlet, and lastly stabilized the entire area. A key aspect of our Corrective Crew training is leaving sites stabilized and aesthetically pleasing. With our routine maintenance, this dry pond has continued to function as designed, managing stormwater runoff and adhering to local compliance requirements.

Raleigh-Durham Dredging Services

Sediment accumulation reduces storage capacity, and can lead to issues with flooding, increased nuisance vegetation, odors, and poor appearance. It can also lead to compliance violations and fines. Dragonfly’s Raleigh-Durham dredging crews will restore capacity and system function with customized solutions, including low-impact hydraulic dredging or conventional mechanical dredging. Our team will work with you to find the best solution for your unique needs.

Low-Impact Hydraulic Dredging

Top: Hydraulic dredge is easily placed in pond by small crane. Bottom: Hydraulic dredge sits in pond pumping accumulated sediment.

Our low-impact dredging services are ideal for properties where access is difficult or equipment impact needs to be minimalized, such as high traffic commercial properties, municipalities, and HOAs. Dragonfly’s hydraulic dredge is easily placed in the water and the dredge pumps accumulated sediment into geotextile bags. The sediment dries in the bags and then can be utilized to restore shorelines or hauled off site.

Conventional Mechanical Dredging

Top: long reach excavator removes sediment from drained city lake. Bottom: Excavator dumps sediment into dump truck from drained city lake.

Depending on site conditions and specific needs, mechanical dredging may be recommended. Mechanical dredging is typically faster and more cost-effective than hydraulic dredging, although the heavy equipment has a higher impact on the area. The above lake for a city park required dredging to restore capacity and prevent continued nuisance vegetation issues. Dragonfly’s dredging specialists removed over 8,000 cubic yards of silt from this 5 acre lake.

Raleigh-Durham Stormwater Conversions

Stormwater ponds start as sediment catch basins during construction. The catch basin is a temporary pond designed to capture pollutant runoff and displaced soil during construction. Once construction is complete, the sediment catch basin is converted into a stormwater control measure to manage stormwater runoff for the new development. If you are involved in a Raleigh-Durham construction project, our experienced Corrective Crews can provide the final conversion for your development. Conversions are some of Dragonfly’s biggest projects.
